Something strikes as strange. I refer to the hulla gulla about the Sydney cricket test. OK. OK. I know! Even my blood boils at the boorish attitude of the Australian players and the ill-concealed bias of Bucknor and co.
But I saw no angry demonstrations in all Indian cities when two hapless NRG women were caressed and molested on New Year's night.
You might say I am making a big fuss about the incident. Try telling that to women, brother!
You might say that it keeps happening in all the Indian cities and towns and villages; the only reason the Juhu incident has kicked up all this attention is because NRIs were involved. The point is not whether the NRIs were involved. We should be thankful that all this ruckus has been created about this particular incident. At least the issue of women's molestation has come to the fore!
Now about the earlier point of the SCG matter rousing more passion than the Juhu issue. There are two reasons for this.
Firstly, I am sad to say this but most of us Indian guys are MCPs (male chauvinistic pigs) at heart and hypocrites to boot. We might tut-tut in public about the issues like molestation, but deep inside we feel, "she deserved it. Going about so late at night.” Or, "Kya hua? What is all this fuss about? Some dame got fingered a little. So what? There are more important things on this planet."Think again, guys. For a woman this is the most important thing in the world. It is like taking away their basic right of freedom. It is like being in prison. Like living in fear. Nobody likes it.
Secondly, shouting at ills done to us by others (read foreigners) is easy. The matter is simple. It is just us vs. them. But the Juhu issue raises questions about us that make us feel uneasy, maybe ashamed. That there are such animals amongst us who outrage the modesty of our women. Maybe there is some flaw in us?
