hulThe mischief maker is at it again. Arjun Singh, the ailing old war-horse of the Congress party, has started a Rahul-for-PM campaign. That Arjun Singh is a Machiavellian politician is a well known fact. His latest Rajiv campaign is aimed at undermining the position of the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. He has foreseen into the future that the Congress cannot win the next election with a lacklustre PM at the helm. By espousing Rahul, he has brought this into sharp focus.
He has not done this for altruistic reasons. The Supreme Court has recently upheld his brain child- 27% reservations for the OBCs. Maybe Singh’s calculation is that in the next election, he has a chance of becoming the PM. But first he had to undermine Manmohan Singh. Secondly he had to bring into focus the fact that Rahul is still a political novice and not mature enough to lead the party. Sonia Gandhi has the 'foreigner' tag on her. So who is left? He, Arjun Singh, of course!
With his "Rahul-as-PM" campaign he has killed two birds with one stone: he has made Congressmen aware that Manmohan Singh is not a 'winning' PM. Secondly he has brought to everyone's mind the fact that Rahul has still some time to go before he is 'fit' enough to sit on the PM's chair.
The fact that Sonia Gandhi summoned Arjun Singh and gave him a dressing down shows that she has understood his little trick. By saying there is no vacancy for the PM's chair, the Congress has dodged the old man's googly, but the damage is done. It has made, not only Congressmen, but the whole country think about the next PM. It remains to be seen if Sonia has the ruthlessness to throw Arjun Singh out of the party. That would be wise.
